Bwindi, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is endowed with remarkable biodiversity. There are 160 different kinds of trees, 100 different kinds of ferns, and an infinite number of butterflies in the park.
Â
Bwindi harbors chimpanzees, forest elephants, antelopes, Colobus monkeys, and l’Hoest’s monkeys. The bird species include the African green broadbill, Chapin’s flycatcher, Grauer’s swamp warbler, Shelley’s crimson-wings, and Turner’s Eremomela. Among the numerous remarkable attractions of the park, mountain gorillas appear to dominate the spotlight. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is unique among mountain gorilla parks as it is the sole location where chimpanzees can also be observed. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is administered by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). UWA has confronted the issues of forest encroachment and minor poaching of wildlife by populations residing near the national park. This is one of the causes for the eviction of the Batwa pygmies from the jungle.

Â
Gorilla trekking is the park’s most popular activity and draws thousands of visitors. Bwindi National Park is the premier destination for gorilla trekking due to its higher population of gorillas and competitively priced permits. The cost of a gorilla permit in Bwindi is $800, whereas in Rwanda it is $1500. Bwindi contains 17 habituated gorilla groups, while more than 50 remain undisturbed in the wild. Only in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park can primate enthusiasts engage in a three-day gorilla habituation adventure. Gorillas in Bwindi may be monitored in four sectors: Rushaga, Ruhija, Buhoma, and Nkuringo.
