Margherita Peak Of Rwenzori Mountains At 5109 Meters

Margherita Peak, standing at 5,109 metres, represents the highest elevation on Mount Stanley within the Rwenzori Mountains, and ranks as the third-highest peak across the African continent. The Rwenzori circuit, renowned for its breathtaking high-altitude experience, starts in the verdant forests at the foot slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains and gradually elevates above the clouds, culminating at the icy Peak of Margherita.

Overview of Margherita Peak

Situated a top Africa’s greatest ice sheet, the trek progresses past the Margherita Glacier, culminating in an ultimate rock scramble to reach the summit of Mount Stanley, the third-highest mountain on the continent, located in the Rwenzori Mountains. Margherita Peak stands as the tallest summit in Uganda.

The summit was initially ascended in 1906 by the Duke of Abruzzi, J. Petigax, C. Ollier, and J. Brocherel.

The path frequently utilized by guides, passing through Elena Hut, closely resembles the route taken by pioneers in years past. The glaciers in the Rwenzoris are experiencing significant retreat due to accelerated ice melting over the past decade attributed to global warming. It is advisable to visit soon to witness this natural phenomenon before it changes further.

How to get to Margherita Peak (Getting There)

The trekking routes in the Rwenzoris can be categorized into two main types: high-altitude and low-altitude.

The low altitude treks generally span 3 to 4 days, achieving a maximum elevation of approximately 3,100 metres. The high altitude treks span a duration of 5 to 12 days, achieving peak elevations of 4,600 meters and beyond. When summiting Margherita Peak, expect to spend a minimum of 7 days in the mountains, culminating at an elevation of 5,109 metres.

 

Through Elena Hut, the ascent will lead you south, passing the outhouse and culminating at a junction in the road. The ascent can be initiated from the Moraine Hut in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC); however, due to ongoing political instability in the region, this route may frequently be closed with little prior notice.

From this junction, several routes can be taken to the Stanley Plateau. One approach involves ascending directly through cracks and crevasses, progressing westward along a series of steep rock formations to reach the more moderate slopes above.

An alternative route involves proceeding south from the small pond towards the steep cliffs of Kitasamba and the Coronation Glacier. This path culminates in a pronounced westward turn, guiding one up the slabs towards the glaciers of the Rwenzoris.

Upon arrival at the glacier, ascend the steep snow or ice to access the more gradual slopes that lead to the Stanley Plateau, located just to the north-west of this location.

The views from the summit are often restricted due to weather conditions, as much of the area to the north-west of the Stanley Plateau gets covered by dense fog. Should you happen to observe the peaks ahead, the nearest one on the left is Alexandra Peak. The Afro Montane forest presents a stunning landscape, characterized by an ever-flowing waterfall cascading over the rocks below.

Getting ready for the ascent to the  Margherita Peak

Reaching Margherita Peak involves traversing icy routes, boulders, and steep inclines with gradients of up to 60%. It is widely regarded as more demanding than Kilimanjaro, thus it is essential to maintain a high level of fitness, and prior experience with high-altitude hiking is advisable.

 

The hike up to Margherita Peak has recently been designated as a technical climb, pertaining solely to the final day when summiting.
