Destinations to Explore on a 12-Day Bwindi Gorilla & Rwenzori Trekking

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park stands out as the premier national park in Uganda, recognized as the top destination for gorilla watching, as it is home to half of the world’s Mountain Gorillas. Bwindi Gorilla trekking in the four sections of Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo offers comparable experiences on varied terrains.

Gorilla Safaris consistently suggests the Ruhija sector or Buhoma sector for convenient access to Queen Elizabeth National Park, which is in proximity to the Buhoma Sector of Bwindi.  Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is an exceptional destination for observing gorillas in Uganda, distinct from the Virunga Mountains that are shared by Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.  The cost of the gorilla permit in Bwindi is $800, and it is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.  In addition to Mountain Gorilla watching, we recommend engaging in other safari activities such as nature walks, bird watching, and cultural tours. Please be advised that if we are unable to secure the gorilla permit for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, we will obtain one for Mgahinga National Park, which is the second destination for gorilla trekking in Uganda.

Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Experience

We provide flying gorilla trekking tours to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park from Entebbe International Airport and Kajjansi Airfield. The flights land at Kihihi Airstrip for quick access to the Buhoma or Ruhija tracking points, and at Kisoro Airstrip for Nkuringo or Rushaga tracking points.  Please consult the reservation team for assistance in planning your Uganda Gorilla Trekking Tours.

Queen Elizabeth National Park spans more than 774 square miles (2,000 km²) between Lake Edward and Lake George, encompassing the Kazinga Channel that links the two lakes and shares a border with Virunga National Park in Congo. Queen Elizabeth National Park was founded in 1954. It has undergone several name changes throughout its history, ultimately reverting to its original colonial name after being known as the Rwenzori National Park for a period, until the visit by the Queen of England. It is ideal for the game drive to observe the tree-climbing lions, volcanic craters, grassy plains, and tropical forest.  It boasts the highest concentration of hippos globally.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park is a renowned mountaineering destination in Uganda, recognized as the third highest mountain range in Africa, following Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya.  The summit of the Rwenzori Mountains presents a greater challenge compared to the other two, necessitating a higher level of fitness. It is recognized as a world heritage site.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park is situated within the Rwenzori Mountains in south-western Uganda, adjacent to the Democratic Republic of Congo. The primary goal of every mountaineer in the Rwenzori is to reach the summit of Margarita Peak on Mount Stanley, which stands at 5,109 meters above sea level. The Rwenzori Mountains host six of the ten tallest peaks in Africa.

12 Days Bwindi Gorillas & Rwenzori Trekking:  Advice, and Tips

Please be advised that for group safaris to Rwenzori and Mountain Gorillas, it is recommended to limit the group size to a maximum of 16 participants. Should the number exceed this limit, we will arrange to divide the group into smaller slots, with one group departing a day ahead of the other. Gorilla Safaris is recognized for its expertise in organizing group trips to Rwenzori, as well as gorilla and wildlife watching across a range of Uganda safari options.

If you choose to be picked up from Kigali, Rwanda, please note that you will encounter a border crossing at either Katuna or Cyanika, depending on the safari itinerary and the gorilla permit allocation.

Uganda Visa: It is recommended that you book and apply for the visa in advance, as the regulations have changed. Visas are no longer granted upon arrival at the airport or border; they must be applied for and approved beforehand.
