2 Days Rwanda Golden Monkey tracking Safari
2 days Rwanda Golden Monkey tracking takes you to Volcanoes National Park for golden monkey tracking & Ib’Iwachu cultural Experience. Our 2-day golden monkey trekking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park gets you in one of Africa’s most ancient wildlife conservation regions.
Volcanoes National Park is located in the northwestern region of Rwanda. It is undoubtedly the most renowned national park in Rwanda. The park has experienced a substantial rise in tourist numbers since its reopening in 1999 following the civil war and genocide. The primary attraction is the endangered mountain gorillas; nonetheless, the park also has golden monkeys, forest elephants, buffaloes, bush duikers, and spotted hyenas.

Volcanoes National Park has documented 178 species of birds. The park features a variety of vegetation, including afro-alpine species at higher elevations, bamboo forests on the lower slopes, rainforests, savanna grasslands, and wetlands. The major cause of this exceptional biodiversity is the presence of five volcanoes in the park: Mount Karisimbi, Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Bisoke, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Muhabura.
The Volcanoes National Park garnered global prominence in the late 1960s and early 1970s due to the efforts of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey. Dian Fossey conducted research on mountain gorillas in the region for twenty years and perished due to her opposition to poachers. She conducted an in-depth study of mountain gorillas and pioneered innovative techniques for gorilla habituation. Later, she shifted her attention from research alone to the protection of gorillas in Africa. Dian Fossey is recognized for her significant role in curtailing the poaching of park wildlife, especially mountain gorillas. Mountain gorillas would very likely be gone by now if she hadn’t worked to raise money and raise awareness of the serious problems they confront.
A 2-day Golden monkey trekking safari in Rwanda entails going through varied terrain to observe one of the most attractive primates on the planet. Golden monkeys constitute a subspecies of the blue monkey. They are exclusively located in the Virunga mountain ranges of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In Uganda, they inhabit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, whilst in Congo, they reside in Virunga National Park and Kahuzi-Biega National Parks. In addition to Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda is home to golden monkeys in Gishwati-Mukura National Park and Nyungwe National Park. Golden Monkeys are distinguished by their golden-orange fur coats. They inhabit troops with up to 80 individuals. Golden monkeys primarily consume bamboo, insects, and occasionally invade crops for potatoes. The African eagle is their main enemy. They constantly keep an eye out for eagles, particularly during rainy seasons. The golden monkeys in Nyungwe and Gishwati-Mukura are unhabituated. In Volcanoes National Park, there exist two habituated groups of golden monkeys, totaling approximately 85 individuals. These two acclimatized groups reside on the slopes of Mount Sabinyo.
Golden monkey trekking is unique due to the absence of an age restriction. Families with children can also visit to observe the primates. Regrettably, golden monkeys are endangered, akin to mountain gorillas. Their population has diminished over the past two decades, raising fears among primatologists that, without intervention, they may face extinction.
