Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda’s most frequented wildlife conservation area. The park encamps Dian Fossey’s renowned Karisoke Research Centre. Fossey is regarded as one of the foremost primatologist in history. She was the pioneer in developing techniques to successfully habituate mountain gorillas. One of her primary discoveries was securing the trust of the Silverback prior to attempting to engage with the other members of group. Fossey then transitioned from research to conservation, vigorously against poaching and the trafficking of infant gorillas. Her struggle against poachers and animal poachers garnered numerous adversaries, culminating in her demise in the 1980s.
The main attractions in Volcanoes National Park are the mountain gorillas. Ten habituated gorilla groups are accessible to tourism, with a daily visitor limit of eight individuals per group.

A Detailed 4 Days Rwanda Gorilla Trekking & Golden Monkey Tracking
Day 1: Kigali city tour – Volcanoes National Park
Our excursions typically commence with a professional guide meeting you from your hotel or airport in the early morning. This 4-day Rwanda Gorilla trekking & Golden Monkey tracking safari will commence with an exploration of the city of Kigali. The Kigali city excursion encompasses a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center, the principal city market, the Presidential Palace Museum, artisan stores, and several additional sites of potential interest. Following the city tour, our guide will escort you to an appropriate restaurant for lunch before commencing the three-hour journey to Volcanoes National Park. The trek entails traversing picturesque mountainous terrain and extensive tea plantations. It will become clear to you why Rwanda is known as “The Land of a Thousand Hills.” Upon arrival in the park, you will be escorted directly to your hotel for check-in and subsequent leisure in your room or the hotel gardens. Prioritize an early bedtime to prepare for gorilla trekking the following day.
Dinner and accommodation at Virunga Lodge (Luxury), Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge (Mid-range) and Kinigi Guesthouse (Basic).
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking & Gorilla Guardians Village (Ib’Iwachu Cultural Village)
7:00 am is when the gorilla tracking briefing begins. This briefing is coordinated by park personnel at the headquarters in Kinigi. All trackers are required to be present at the park offices and must attend the briefing to receive an overview of the anticipated activities. As previously mentioned, there are 10 habituated gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park, and you will be allocated to one based on your general fitness. Following the briefing, park officials will lead you into the forest. Gorilla tracking at Volcanoes National Park requires a duration of 2 to 6 hours. Upon identifying your gorilla family, you have a mere hour to observe them. Heed the directives of your Guide and maintain composure, even when the silverback seeks to assert dominance. Avoid abrupt and superfluous movements to prevent alarming the gorillas.
Upon completing one hour of primate observation, you will return to the initial location where our guide will be present to escort you back to your hotel for lunch. Post-lunch, shower and repose while awaiting the Driver to transport you to the Gorilla Guardians Village. The Village was once referred to as the Iby’iwacu cultural village. Initially a venue for former poachers to sell souvenirs to tourists, it has since been transformed into a premier cultural institution in the nation. You will engage with cultural performers for entertainment and be invited to participate.
Dinner and accommodation at Virunga Lodge (Luxury), Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge (Mid-range) and Kinigi Guesthouse (Basic).
Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking and Visiting Lake Burera and Ruhondo
Following your breakfast, you will depart for the Volcanoes National Park offices for an additional briefing on golden monkey tracking. You will have the possibility to hire a porter to assist with any heavy bags during the briefing or at the starting site. Following around two hours of hiking, you will observe them foraging above tree branches and on the ground. Golden monkeys inhabit three countries:
Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They are critically endangered and confront significant risks from anthropogenic activity. Golden monkeys exhibit playful and endearing characteristics. They reside in aggregations of approximately 80 individuals. They are at ease with flash photography, in contrast to gorillas. Upon concluding your time with them, you will return to the initial location where our driver will be awaiting your arrival. The subsequent program will include lunch and refreshments, followed by a drive to the twin lakes of Ruhondo and Burera. The primary activities at the lake encompass island hopping, canoeing, nature walks, and birdwatching.
Dinner and accommodation at Virunga Lodge (Luxury), Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge (Mid-range) and Kinigi Guesthouse (Basic).
Day 4: Return to Kigali
Awaken and partake in a late breakfast while preparing to check out and commence the journey back to Kigali. The driver will transport you to the airport if you have a flight scheduled for that day. If you remain in Rwanda, he will transport you to your accommodation.
